“When the rift stirs, it does not awaken the dark alone, but everything the light tried to forget.”

The valley should have been quiet. Instead, it groaned.

It started deep within the earth, so subtly it could have been mistaken for imagination. Then it came again, stronger this time. A slow pulse rolled through the ground, like the heartbeat of something ancient buried beneath layers of stone and time. The wind stopped. Mist drifted between the lifeless trees as crimson cracks began spreading across the valley floor.

The Rift.

The Maw didn’t arrive; it was already there.

Light bent around its smooth, black silhouette. Pale red eyes glowed beneath a featureless head. Tendrils drifted from its back and shoulders, twisting through the air like living smoke. Beneath its feet, crimson cracks spread across the valley floor. Deep below those glowing fissures, something stirred.

Almost.

The voice echoed from everywhere at once.

Almost awake.

A second voice sliced through the stillness.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

The Maw turned.

Miriam stood at the edge of the fractured ground, her dark cloak hanging behind her. Pale blue light gathered in her outstretched hand. She had guarded this seal too long not to recognize what was happening.

“You were banished,” she said. “You can’t come back without breaking the seals.”

The Maw’s gaze locked onto her.

“And yet, here I am.”

Darkness folded inward, revealing another face.

“Miriam,” it said softly. “You forget so easily.”

She froze.

“Who are you?”

The figure smiled.

“You know me.”

The light in her hand flickered. Something changed in her expression, there and gone before she could hide it.

“That’s not possible.”

“Come closer.”

Miriam knew better. But the face before her belonged to someone she had tried too hard to forget. She stepped forward, and the valley erupted.

The ground split beneath her feet as dark wisps shot up from the rift and wrapped around her wrists. Pale blue energy tore from Miriam’s hand, scattering shadows across the valley floor. For a moment, they recoiled. Then more surged upward. Miriam planted her feet and fought against them, but the Rift pulled harder. Before a cry could escape, Miriam vanished into the glowing fracture. The Rift sealed shut, and silence returned to the valley. The familiar face faded, revealing the Maw in its true form.

Someone else was coming. The Maw sensed him before he stepped out of the mist.

Vex emerged, sword in hand. Frost clung to his dark coat, and silver patterns traced the worn armor beneath. His eyes searched the valley. Miriam had always returned, until now.

“Miriam?”

His call faded into the mist.

“Too late.”

Vex stopped. He knew that voice.

“You.”

The Maw emerged from the mist.

“Still carrying that sword,” it said. “After all this time.”

Vex raised the blade.

“It stopped you once.”

“Did it?”

Darkness flowed over the Maw, and another face appeared. Vex stared at it. He recognized the face, or at least he thought he did. Something stirred in his memory, but when he tried to grasp it, it slipped away.

“You found me.”

His sword lowered slightly.

“Who are you?”

The figure smiled.

“Don’t you remember?”

Vex tried again. There was something there. He could feel it. But he couldn’t reach it.

“You searched for me,” the figure said. “You promised you would bring me back.”

Vex tightened his grip on the sword.

“I don’t remember that.”

“I know.”

The Rift stirred beneath them, and the illusion flickered. Vex saw the truth. He swung his sword through the darkness, tearing through one shadow before others closed around his arms and legs. He fought against them, setting himself free wherever he could. The ground split beneath his feet. Crimson light spilled through the opening as the shadows tightened, pulling him toward the Rift. Vex drove his sword into the earth, trying to hold himself back, but the blade tore through the ground as he was dragged closer. Then his grip slipped. Vex disappeared into the Rift, and the fracture closed behind him. The Maw stared at the place where he had been.

“Two guardians lost in their own memories,” it whispered. “Two more pieces in place.”

The wind returned, and with it, a brilliant glow spread through the mist, forcing the shadows back. A massive form emerged from the darkness.

The Umbrenox.

The ancient guardian took the form of a massive brown bear. Light shimmered beneath its fur, as if starlight flowed through every hair. Its crimson eyes remained fixed on the Maw. It stepped forward, and the shadows receded.

“Release them.”

The command echoed across the valley.

“Your guardians?” the Maw asked.

“They protect the seals. They do not belong to the Rift.”

“You still cling to balance, my old friend.”

“You violate every law that keeps this world intact.”

Light gathered around the Umbrenox.

“I will not let this continue.”

“You cannot stop what has already begun.”

The Maw’s voice softened.

“The four you guide will fail.”

“They are stronger than you realize.”

“No,” the Maw said. “They are shaped by what haunts them.”

A faint tremor moved through the Rift.

“The harlequin will break beneath his fear of failure.”

A crimson fracture spread through the earth.

“The deer will kneel beneath the weight of his guilt.”

The wind rose.

“The dove will speak the words that undo him.”

Shadows twisted across the valley.

“And the pit bull…”

Everything paused.

“Shall become what he fears most.”

The light surrounding the Umbrenox intensified.

“You see only their weakness.”

“It is all that matters in the end.”

For a moment, neither gave way. Light flashed across the valley as shadow surged to meet it. The earth shook from the collision. The Maw dissolved into the darkness and slipped into the Rift.

The Rift is waking.

The Maw’s voice lingered after it vanished.

And when it does, the world will remember me.

Silence returned. The Umbrenox stood alone beneath the dark sky, its radiance slowly dimming.

“They will not stand alone.”
